Abstract
Eldana borers, specifically Eldana saccharina, are insect pests that can cause significant damage to sugarcane crops. The caterpillars of these moths are active and tough borers that can escape capture by descending from the host plant on a silken thread. They push frass, or excrement, to the exterior of the cane stalk through the holes they bore. This information sheet provides details on the identification, behavior, and history of Eldana borers in South Africa. It also highlights the areas where recent outbreaks have occurred.
