Abstract
This paper discusses the implementation of mechanical vapour recompression (MVR) at Pongola to enhance steam balance and reduce extraneous fuel costs in sugar milling. Four performance test runs on a 31 t/h MVR unit are analyzed, showing a saving of around 6 t/h of high-pressure steam and significant cost reduction. The capital cost of the installation is outlined.
